Blog Post #3 - The Four Gospel Writers
During the presentations I learned that each of the four evangelist has a symbol that represents them. Mathew is a winged man, Mark was a winged lion, Luke was a winged ox, and last John was an eagle. I also learned that the four gospels writers didn’t right at the same time as one another and that only two of the writers, Matthew and Mark, followed Jesus while he was still alive. I focused more on Luke and from research I found that he wrote his gospel around the time of 85 c.e. Luke didn’t personally know jesus so he got his information primarily from St. Paul who was spreading the word of christ. Lastly I learned that all of the Gospels were originally written in greek rather than hebrew which would’ve been the best guess someone would have.
There were many similarities between each passage that the writers wrote but I noticed that in Matthew's and Mark's gospel, Jesus cried out to God doubting him because he was in so much pain he couldn’t imagine God would actually put him threw it. They were also eyewitnesses in Jesus’s life so it is very likely that Jesus indeed did doubt God since both writers wrote the same thing. On the contrary, Luke and John both wrote about how Jesus trusted God and obeyed his plan not doubting him at all. They both wrote that Jesus offered his soul to God while waiting to end his time on Earth so that he may finally be with God in Heaven. In all of the four gospels, they all write that there were two thieves on the left and right of Jesus who were crucified with him. All three of them died on the cross and joined God in heaven.
Some differences between the four gospel writers was how detailed they wrote about the same event. Where Matthew was a very detailed gospel writing very precisely about the events Jesus endured, Luke's gospel was a summary of what he learned from others about the events Jesus endured. Each of the four evangelists write about the same event very differently in the way certain words were changed and other things added while other things were taken out. Mark and Luke aren’t that descriptive while writing about the events that took place. They were more like a big summary. Compared to Matthew and John who wrote as if they were standing right where Jesus lay dying on the cross. There were also small events that one of the writers wrote about and the others didn’t which really made the four gospels appear very different.
I would prefer to read Matthew's gospel because he was an eyewitness to events in Jesus’s life. Matthew witnessed Jesus spreading the word of God and some of the many miracles that Jesus performed during his lifetime. Also, when reading Matthew's stories, he is very detailed and help you better imagine what was happening in each verse of his Gospel. The way Matthew describes certain events that happened as Jesus walked through his journey is very detailed. Matthew was working for the Roman government and wasn’t very liked by the Jewish people so Jesus took him and told him to follow him and he did. Matthew witnessed Jesus helping people's lives first hand since he was one of the people which I why I would prefer to read his gospel over someone else's.
